How to Ensure That Your Child Completes Daily Dental Care Tasks

Tooth Brushing

Every parent knows the importance of good dental care. That’s why one of the first habits you teach your child is how to properly brush their teeth. However, children often take this task as an opportunity to test the waters of their independence. Many children will skip tooth brushing as an attempt to understand the rules of life. As a parent, you have to “somehow” know when your child is skipping out and take action to correct your child, for the sake of their health. Although you don’t have eyes in the back of your head or a nanny cam to follow your children wherever they go, you can use these tips to find out if your child is really practicing proper dental care on a daily basis.

How to Know That Your Child isn’t Brushing Their Teeth

Dry toothbrush. If your child’s toothbrush is dry, it’s an obvious sign that they haven’t brushed their teeth. Check their toothbrush and follow up with your child.

Bad breath. Bad breath, especially at a young age, is often the result of bacteria buildup caused by lingering food particles. Check your child’s breath, and if it’s unpleasant, send them back for a tooth brushing.

Food particles remain in your child’s teeth. If your child proudly proclaims they’ve completed a thorough tooth brushing, ask for a smile. If food particles remain, send your child back to the bathroom to brush their teeth again.

Your child has a white tongue. Pink tongues are clean tongues—tongues that are white have bacteria lurking. Make sure your child knows they need to brush their tongue as well as their teeth for complete dental care.

Your child finishes brushing too quickly. If your child finishes brushing fast, help them understand the importance of proper dental care, which includes carefully brushing every area of their mouth. Even baby teeth need to be brushed for at least two minutes.

Dental floss never runs out. Flossing every day is just as important as brushing twice a day. Monitor the bathroom garbage can for dental floss strings. If you floss at the same time as your child, you both should run out of floss at about the same time.

Perform the “squeak test.” Ask your child to wet their finger and rub it quickly across their teeth. If you hear a squeaking sound, your child has squeaky-clean teeth and has carefully brushed.

Cavities. If your child develops cavities, visit an affordable dentist in Crown Point. This is a sign that your child is skipping all or part of their dental care routine. Your family dentistry specialist can offer additional tips to help keep your child excited about brushing.
